When setting prices in backend without taxes, the calculation of the final price can be faulty. In this case the problem was with one article, where 1 item cost 14.00, but for 2 items the single price was suddenly 14.01 and the final price was calculated to be 28.01.
The solution: the price calculation can be changed by setting Configuration -> Tax -> Tax Calculation Method Based On to “Unit Price”!
